Saarlouis with around 34.200 inhabitants is the sixth largest city in the Saarland. The city is the administrative seat of the district Saarlouis and is considered a school and trade center. The economic focus is the auto industry. From 1966 the German Ford plants built in the new industrial area Roederberg a large automobile plant. With around 6.500 employees, the plant is one of the largest employers in the region, and there are also 2.000 jobs at the surrounding suppliers.
These are other important companies Pieper department store with several buildings in the city center and the chocolate factory Ludwig (brands including Trumpf, Schogetten, Mauxion) with over 1.000 employees. The company DSD-Dillinger Stahlbau is based in Saarlouis-Roden. The Méguin mineral oil works, which have been in existence since 1847, have belonged to the majority since 2006 Liqui Moly GmbH from Ulm and produce the complete range for them motor oils.
