Schweinfurt is an independent city in Lower Franconia. The city on Main is the administrative seat of the district of Schweinfurt, upper center, university, school, administrative city and Franconian wine town. Schweinfurt is considered the world capital of ball bearings and is today the most important industrial city in northern Bavaria and the center of Europe Rolling bearing industry. According to the Institute of German Business, the city had the highest GDP in Bavaria in 2010, ranking third in Germany after Wolfsburg and Frankfurt am Main. The catchment area of ​​the city is Main-Rhön region in eastern Lower Franconia with 432.000 inhabitants (2015) and South Thuringia. Several significant inventions came from Schweinfurt: usable ball bearings by Friedrich Fischer (1884), bicycle freewheel (1889) and coaster brake (1903) by Ernst Sachs and the modern inline skates (1978) by SKF.
