Speyer information
Speyer is an independent city on the Upper Rhine. As a Roman foundation, then known as Noviomagus or Civitas Nemetum (capital of the Nemeter tribe), it is one of the oldest cities in Germany and became the center of Speyergau around 600 as Spira. In the Middle Ages Speyer was one of the most important cities of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation as a free imperial city. Between 1816 and 1945 seat of the Bavarian administration of the Pfalz, Speyer belongs today as an independent city Rheinland-Pfalz and has about 50.000 inhabitants (as of 2015).
Speyer is well known for his Imperial and Marian Cathedral. It is the world's largest surviving Romanesque church and has been a UNESCOWorld Heritage.
