Mühldorf is the broadcasting area of ​​the western metropolitan region of Munich and in Bavarian Chemical triangle. Mühldorf am Inn is located between Landshut and Rosenheim approx. 78 kilometers east of the state capital Munich, 99 kilometers southwest of Passau and 65 kilometers northwest of Salzburg. Mühldorf forms the intersection of the main traffic routes east of Munich, the A 94, the state roads 2092, 2352 and 2550 as well as the B 299. There is still no continuous motorway connection to Munich; the federal road 12 / state road 2550 is prone to accidents.

The city is a member of the Association of Cities Inn-Salzach. Mühldorf lies at the intersection of important traffic routes between Munich and Passau. Located on the northern edge of an Inn loop, Mühldorf was an enclave of the Prince-Archdiocese of Salzburg in Bavaria until 1802 and served as an important trading center, especially in the Middle Ages. The center of the city is a historic city center with buildings in the Inn-Salzach style.
